What's a Business For?

Why are virtue and integrity so vital to an economy?

Virtue and integrity are important to an economy and capitalism because without them no one will win. Integrity protects longterm stability, companies can cut corners or lie but in the long run they will find they have corrupted their growth. It kills the trust that is needed for people to invest. Markets rely on trust, without it no one will want to invest as it feels more like a risky gamble. "Trust, too, is fragile.Like a piece of china, once cracked it is never quite the same." (Handy, 2002, Pg. 3)

According to Charles Handy, what is the “real justification” for the existence of businesses?

The real justification for business is create wealth and value for society as a whole, not to make the rich richer. The goods and services that business provide improve the quality of life of all those around. When a business is too money and profit oriented they become cold and people start to shy away from them. A business serving a society first will help the society and business flourish.

What are two solutions proposed by Handy that you agree with? Why?

1. Business must restore its reputation as a friend not the enemy. By being proactive in good deeds. That means with employment being fair with salaries and benefits. Environmentally taking action to preserve what we have, not contaminating goods due to efficiency. Turning lies and shadowed works into truth and integral work. Looking for the benefit for all, which in turn will benefit the business beyond measure.

2. Make sure profit is not the only end goal. This accountability would look like a report on how they help society and gained profit not just gained profit by hurting others. When profit becomes the main goal we become like Gollum in Lord of the Rings willing to dive into the fire for "our precious".

Attitude on Money

What is your attitude toward money?

Money is a neutral tool depending on whose hands it is in can serve a righteous or wicked purpose. I have always had a desire for financial freedom, to live a life where money isn't adding to my life's stressors. The lack of money or abundance can make life that much more stressful. If you are blessed financially I feel it to be a duty to help those who are less fortunate.

How can your view of money affect the way you live?

If you see money as evil you will avoid it or use it unwisely. Not budgeting and planning ahead because an evil thing leaving isn't a bad thing. On the contrary, seeing money as a good thing or a tool can help you build wealth and help those around you. An obsession of money will take the people or things you love as you set money above them.

What rules are recommended for prospering?

To prosper is to plan ahead. With thoughtful planning, saving, budgeting, and investing money will be a tool for opportunities. Another rule is to do something you enjoy or lose yourself in. If you find something like this the goal of financial freedom will be even more obtainable. Practicing a positive work and family life keeping the important things in top spot will help you realize what is worth spending. Spending outside of our means will hurt our dream of freedom. There is always something nicer and newer, not falling for the trap of consumerism will free us. Recognizing the importance of helping our neighbor will show God we are good stewards. Paying tithing and donating to those in need will help us prosper.
